6 Natural Home Remedies for Erectile Dysfunction

Erectile dysfunction (ED) is the inability to achieve or maintain an adequate erection for satisfactory sexual activity. Erectile dysfunction is more common in men over age 50, but ED can occur at any age. Pharmaceutical durgs to treat erectile dysfunction are a multi-billion dollar business, but as with all drugs, they can be expensive and potentially dangerous. Natural remedies are often effective for treating ED and are usually safer and cheaper than drugs. Here are six natural home remedies that are used to treat erectile dysfunction.

1) L-Arginine

L-arginine is an amino acid that increases nitric oxide levels in the body. Nitric oxide is a chemical that signals smooth muscle surrounding blood vessels (including those in the penis) to relax, which dilates blood vessels and increases blood flow – a necessity for achieving and maintaining erections. L-arginine is found naturally in protein foods such as chicken, fish, meat, peas, and walnuts. It is also a popular supplement for sports and bodybuilding since it is used for protein synthesis in the body.

2) L-Carnitine

L-carnitine is a nutrient that is derived from the amino acids lysine and methionine. It is produced naturally in the body, but it is also found in food, particularly in animal products and in supplement form. Although there are various forms of carnitine supplements, propionyl L-carnitine has been used for blood flow issues and for erectile dysfunction.

3) Muira Puama

Muira puama is a flowering bush native to the Brazilian Amazon. Used historically as a folk remedy in Brazil for erectile dysfunction, joint pain, and digestive complaints, muira puama is now mainly used as a treatment for erectile dysfunction and as a male aphrodisiac.

4) Niacin

Niacin, or vitamin B3, which is found in chicken, fish and grains, may help men with erectile dysfunction if they also have high cholesterol. Research indicates that men who had moderate or severe erectile dysfunction, reported an improvement in their ability to maintain an erection after taking a niacin supplement for 12 weeks. The most common side effect was skin flushing and itching. No-flush niacin and niacinamide will not produce the same results.

5) Red Korean Ginseng

Red Korean ginseng is Panax ginseng, usually from Korea. In herbal medicine, red Korean ginseng is used to stimulate sexual function and boost energy. Red Korean ginseng may boost blood flow to the penis. Studies suggest that red ginseng may improve erection quality in men with ED.

6) Zinc

Zinc is a mineral involved in regulating many enzymes and hormones. It is found in a wide variety of foods such as red meat, poultry, oysters, beans, and fortified cereal. Low levels of zinc have been associated with sexual dysfunction. Zinc deficiency has been associated with reduced serum testosterone levels. Zinc supplementation appears to increase serum testosterone although it appears to only raise testosterone levels in people who are deficient in zinc.

Four of these natural home remedies are common dietary supplements, and the two herbs have a long tradition of use in herbal medicine, so you could take all of them. A better way, though, is to add one at a time. If adding niacin supplements, for example, takes care of your erectile dysfunction,   you may not want to add anything else.
