High-Protein Diet Linked to Lower Blood Pressure

A high protein diet is linked to a LOWER risk of high blood pressure, according to new study. Researchers found that people who ate around 102g of protein a day had a 40% lower risk of developing high blood pressure than people who ate around 58g a day.
You might think that a diet involving juicy steaks, blocks of cheese or pots of houmous is a heart-attack waiting to happen.

But people who eat a high-protein diet have a lower risk of high blood pressure than those who eat less protein.

U.S. researchers found people who consumed about 102g of protein a day had a 40 per cent lower risk of developing high blood pressure than people who consumed half this amount. Read more

6 Natural Ways to Lower High Blood Pressure

High blood pressure is a serious condition that needs to be dealt with, but before submitting to a lifetime regimen of pharmaceuticals, you may want to try these natural ways to lower high blood pressure.
Millions of people take medication for high blood pressure, and that is unlikely to change despite new guidelines that slightly relax hypertension standards for older Americans.

One of the nation’s top cardiologists says that having high blood pressure does not mean you have to stay on hypertension drugs for life. There are natural ways to lower blood pressure, says Chauncey Crandall, M.D., that allow many people to stop taking side effect-causing medications.  Read more

Still Think Salt Is the Cause of High Blood-Pressure?

Do you (or your doctor) still think that salt is the cause of high blood pressure? The real villain could be high-fructose corn syrup, says Paul Fassa.
High sodium intake as a source of high blood pressure has been an unchallenged dogmatic mantra for decades. But a few renegade MDs, several naturopaths, and chiropractors have challenged the unproven hypothesis of salt being the basis of high blood pressure (HBP). Turns out that the link between high sodium intake and elevated blood pressure is a false one.

Pure, unrefined salt is actually a necessary and helpful dietary component. Perhaps the most well known salt promoter is Dr. David Brownstein, MD, author of Salt Your Way to Health. Refined commercial table salt, used excessively in processed foods, is processed with toxic chemicals and stripped of its inherent nutritional value. It’s mostly poison with very little nutrition, though even using table salt often won’t lead to high blood pressure. Read more

Sleeping an Extra Hour Every Night Lowers Blood Pressure

Researchers found people showing early signs of high blood pressure could restore readings to healthy levels by sleeping an extra hour every night
Going to bed an hour earlier than usual could help to ward off high blood pressure, according to a new study.

Researchers found people who were showing the early signs of high blood pressure were able to restore readings to healthy levels in just six weeks if they had an extra hour in bed every night.

The study, carried out at Harvard Medical School in Boston, USA, looked at men and women who regularly slept for only seven hours or less a night and were beginning to have borderline high blood pressure readings. Read more

High Blood Pressure: 3 Natural Remedies

High blood pressure is a serious health problem, but fortunately there are many natural blood pressure remedies which are effective, less costly, and lack the side effects of pharmaceuticals, says Celeste M. Smucker, MPH, PhD.
Hypertension or high blood pressure is a serious health problem which impacts nearly 30% of the American population. Its prevalence is growing as is it's cost, and people who suffer from this condition are also likely to experience heart attacks and strokes as well as kidney damage, loss of vision, and impaired cognitive ability. In 2008 the cost of hypertension was estimated to be in excess of $69 billion not including associated cardiovascular complications which up the total by another $100 billion. Unfortunately, according to an article in the American Journal of Hypertension only about 24% of those affected by hypertension are able to control their blood pressure. In addition, among those who take drugs for this condition, only 43% have it under control. Fortunately there are many natural blood pressure remedies which are effective, less costly, and lack the side effects of pharmaceuticals. Read more

Relax and Salt to Taste

Joseph Mercola reveals the health benefits of unrefined, natural salt.
For many decades now, U.S. policy makers have been attempting to get Americans to eat less salt. But the drive to do this has little basis in science.

In fact, a recent meta-analysis by the Cochrane Review involving a total of 6,250 subjects found no strong evidence that cutting salt intake reduces the risk for heart attacks, strokes or death.1

Another study published last year found that lower salt consumption actually increased your risk of death from heart disease.2

A review of the available research reveals that much of the science behind the supposed link between salt and high blood pressure is dubious at best. Read more

Stop the War on Salt

Mark Sisson sets the record straight on the demonized element and blood pressure.
The salt debate rages on outside these halls, but I've never really opened MDA's doors to the tempest (beyond a short dalliance several years ago). Today, though, I am. We've likely all consumed a fair bit of sodium chloride over the past holiday weekend, and I imagine a few of us are wondering whether that's a problem or not. Ever timely, reader John has written in with his salt story and a simple question: how much salt is suitable for humans?

Here's his question: Read more
